慣用語第八集/Phrases VIII

Count on,是指望、依靠或是信賴:

We are counting on you to be in charge when we are gone.
我們指望我們離開時,你能主導。

The last straw,是指在一連串不逾快的事裡,最後一件造成你忍無可忍的事:

Joe has been late to work lately. It was the last straw when he missed work on Friday. He was fired after that.
Joe最近上班都遲到。他星期五翹班讓人忍無可忍,之後他被炒魷魚。 

Get someone's feet wet, 是第一次體驗新事物。

Once you get your feet wet, I guarantee that you'll like it.
當你去體驗後,你保證你會喜歡。

With all due respect是放在有禮貌得表態異議之前, 類似"儘管非常的尊敬",

With all due respect to his teammates, I think he contributed the most to his team.
儘管我非常的尊敬他的隊友,我認為他對團隊貢獻最大。

Tongue in Cheek, 是在開完笑的意思,

You shouldn't take it so seriously, I said it tongue in cheek.
你不應該這麼認真, 我剛講的是開完笑的。

Take a rain check 是這次不能赴約但約改天,

I'm sorry that I can't go to dinner with you tonight, but can I take a rain check?
抱歉我今晚不能跟你吃晚餐,但可以改天嗎?

Take it with a grain of salt, 是抱著持疑的心態:

You should take what he says with a grain of salt.
你應該對他所說的話抱著持疑的心態。

Cut corners,類似偷工減料,

The company has a bad reputation for cutting corners.
這間公司因偷工減料而形象不好。

A far cry from,是指相差很大:

What he says is a far cry from what he does.
他說的跟他做的相差很大。

Get the best of someone, 是指某人受到某件事的左右:

He always lets his temper get the best of him.
他總是讓他自己的脾氣左右他。

Rub it in someone's face,是指刻意得把優勢展現在別人面前讓別人難堪或是把自己捧高。

Bob is a wealthy person, but he always likes to rub it in your face.
Bob是個富裕的人, 但他總是喜歡炫富。

By any stretch of the imagination,是指完全不是,一般是用在負面的否定句:

Jim is not a smart person by any stretch of the imagination.
Jim 完全不是一個聰明的人。(這句話是否定句, 不是一個聰明的人是負面的)

So-called,通常意味著所提到的命名是有爭議性的,或是表達的人並不認同此命名:

He is the so-called best player.
他就是所謂的最佳球員。(這句話就意味著他是最好的這個部分是有爭議性的,或是表達的人並不認同)
